Raegan Baker, a Restorative Aide at d’Youville Pavilion, has been selected for the 2010 Excellence in Long-Term Care Award!

She has been working in a CNA and Restorative Aide capacity for our facility since 2004. Raegan displays extra ordinary level of detail to our Elders everyday. She provides restorative programming to those in need, as quoted from her supervisor, “Raegan is flexible, she will work as a CNA when needed and can also cover two floors as a Restorative aide, prioritizing her schedule to accommodate the need. Raegan has broad shoulders and can work with the most challenging of care needs and still leave smiling.” Raegan advocates and understands how important her role is in the daily lives of our Elders and when she comes to work, she checks in to assure she is able to meet their care needs to the best of her ability. I have witnessed Raegan go out of her way to provide restorative services to those Elders who were not on the “to see list” but requested a “walk” for the day.

Raegan is perceived as a leader among her peers in promoting a positive environment for the care of our Elders. This year Raegan volunteered to help with our facility’s skills fair. Raegan provided education to her peers on appropriate transfers and use of SLIPP and gait belt devices. This education was geared to promote safe practices for both the Elders and employees. Raegan is a mentor, and has trained several new employees, both CNA and Restorative Aides. Raegan is a shining star.

Raegan has stepped up to the plate to assist her neighborhood (term we use versus unit) to bring quality of life to the Elders who reside there. Her neighborhood voted to have a dog, Zoey, to come and live in the neighborhood. After some time, Zoey was displaying some behaviors that were uncomfortable and needed to be corrected. In coming up with a plan, the team approached Raegan to assist us with being trained by a dog trainer to curb these behaviors. Raegan, not ever owning a dog, agreed! She has been dedicated to her work with Zoey and our Elders who live in the neighborhood are enjoying having Zoey back in their lives.

Raegan is special to all of us, including the Elders. Excellence is a word that easily comes to mind when we think of Raegan. She has a “can do attitude,” that is recognized by our Elders, her peers, managers and administration.
