Have you ever thought about participating in a 5K or have you ever wondered what one is?
First, a 5K is approximately 3.1 miles. For those of us who break into a sweat just thinking about having to run, the thought of jogging a 5K might seem unattainable. The truth is it’s easier than you might think.
The key is start slow and gradually progress. The issue most could-be runners face is they start out too fast and go too far leaving them sore and feeling less than motivated in the days to come. If this is you, we can help!
We’ll provide you with a doable program in which you can gradually progress your distance, alternating between walking and jogging, and you don’t have to worry about speed –phew!
In just 9 short weeks, you could be ready for your first 5K! We don’t want to rush you though. So if you feel you need to repeat a week of the training program, we’ve built in an extra week for that as well.
This program runs from February 24 to April 25. We will meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings starting at 6:05am at the Bates College Merrill Gymnasium indoor track. Each session will take 20 to 30-minutes. Optional group warm-up, cool-down, and strengthening is available.
If these days don’t work for you, you can still participate in the program at the indoor track on Tuesday and Thursday mornings any time between 6:05-6:55am.
The program cost $55. You may register by calling 777-8898. HealthSteps is part of the Prevention & Wellness Services offered through St. Mary’s Health System.
