St. Mary’s Health System has a lot to be thankful for, actually we have over 250 reasons to be thankful, our Volunteers! From ages 12 to 98, our Volunteers each add their own unique contribution to our health system. We are fortunate to have an amazing group of dedicated and devoted Volunteers. In 2010 our Volunteers donated 32,000 hours of their personal time to improve the services we offer to our residents, patients and the community.

I asked a few of our Volunteers why they volunteer here at St. Mary’s and these are the responses I received:

Mary Minigell – Mary volunteers in the Gift Shop and has been with St. Mary’s since 2000
“I volunteer at St. Mary’s because it is a not for profit organization & I do not want to work for someone else’s bottom line, plus I have made friends here and I love St. Mary’s!”

Gisele Gagnon – Gisele volunteers in our Patient Transport Office and has been with St. Mary’s since 1992
“It’s pay back time for me. My daughter use to work here at the hospital and St. Mary’s was so good to her, I wanted to pay them back.”

Sheila Sylvester – Sheila volunteers in our Patient Transport Office and has been with St. Mary’s since 2000
“I saw an ad in the paper and thought I’d try it out. I enjoy the people, it’s convenient and pleasant.”

Irene Gauthier – Irene volunteers in our Patient Transport Office as well as our Gift shop and has been with St. Mary’s since 2004
“My daughter told me to come and volunteer here and I wanted to pay back the hospital for all the help they’ve provided me.”

Scott Olehnik – Scott is a Bates Student who volunteers in our Patient Transport Office and begin volunteering at the beginning of 2011
“It is convenient for me to walk here and volunteer, also I eventually want to go to med school and this experience has been interesting and enlightening.”

Kevin Regan – Kevin is a Bates Student who volunteers in our Patient Transport Office and in our Emergency Department and has been with St. Mary’s since 2010
“I love volunteering with my group of lovely ladies! The program is very well structured, I actually am able to become involved.”

Anita Turgeon – Anita volunteers in our Patient Transport Office and has been with St. Mary’s since 2002
“I owed it to my community to volunteer. I was born in Lewiston, I raised my family in Lewiston, I wanted to give back.”

Bette Arsenault – Bette volunteers in our Patient Transport Office and has been with St. Mary’s since 2000
“I saw an ad in Sun Spots looking for volunteers for the Gift Shop, when I came in to interview my availability didn’t match the time they needed in the gift shop so I was asked if I wouldn’t mind volunteering in the Patient Transport office so I said sure, and I’m happy I did. I volunteer with a great group of people and I love being on the move.”

The common theme from our Volunteers from all of our service areas, Patient Transport, d’Youville Pavilion, Nutrition Center, Valet Parking, Information Desks-Greeters, Food Pantry, Events & Special Projects, Cancer Resource Center, Pastoral Care, Mail service, Office Support, is that they volunteer at St. Mary’s Health System because they want to, they have chosen us and we thank them for doing so!

The week of April 10 to April 16 is National Volunteer Week, when you come across a volunteer transporting a patient or answering a phone or helping with an activity, smile and thank them for all they do.
