St. Mary’s Health System’s Development Office would like to invite you to attend their spring event, “Mystery at Our Class Reunion,” a mystery dinner theater that takes place at a high school class reunion created by Mystery for Hire (www.mysteryforhire.com).
The event will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at The Royal Oak Room in Lewiston, Maine at 6:00 pm.
The evening will begin with a social hour where you will have time to visit friends and browse the silent auction tables. Guests will enjoy scrumptious hors d’oeuvres and a fine dining experience prepared by Personal Touch Catering of Buxton, Maine. Following dinner, Mystery for Hire will set the stage for the mystery. The suspects will be introduced, formally interrogated and the audience will solve the crime and pronounce the sentence. Everyone can participate and anyone can be a suspect! Once the mystery is solved there will be a DJ to play the popular tunes of your day and dancing will commence.
Don’t miss out! Please consider joining us for this unique night of mystery and intrigue!! Tickets are $75 per person or $65 if purchased on or before February 13, 2013. Tables of eight are $500. For more info, contact Mary at 207-755-3366 or email at mellingwood@stmarysmaine.com. All attendees are encouraged to wear attire from the year they graduated!

The d’Youville Fund for the Needy, one of the many special purpose funds we can contribute to during the Annual Hearts United Employee Campaign, helped me. I was a full time student, a full time worker here, and the mom of a one year old. I needed to desperately get out of an abusive relationship. Unfortunately, I was not earning a great deal. Like most abused women I was financially stuck. With hesitation, I applied for help. And I was granted money to put a security deposit down on a new apartment for my daughter and I. This is one of the many reasons why I give. I am proud to give.

The Oncology Support Fund and the donations to it from the Annual Employee Hearts United Campaign has been a critical resource for some of our patients with cancer. An example of how important this support is, is the story of one gentleman who became unable to work due to his cancer diagnosis and had no health insurance. He was also challenged at the time with caring for his mother who was also very ill. He required tube feedings, which are very costly without insurance to pay for them. At this juncture he had become unable to eat safely by mouth. We accessed the Oncology Support Fund to purchase him several cases of tube feedings and needed medications to bridge this resource gap until his insurance and disability applications were processed and decided upon. We make every effort to reserve these funds for the neediest of our patients, attempting to fulfill their needs and request via other means, and the Support Fund was the perfect solution for this gentleman to get the nutrition and medication he needed in a very short period of time.

St. Mary’s Development Office hosted Shamrocks and Shenanigans on Saturday, March 17 at Martindale Country Club in Auburn. The guests, many adorned in celebratory green attire, enjoyed an array of St. Patrick’s Day activities.
St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center’s cancer program is the recipient of the event’s proceeds grossing over $36,000. Under the direction of the newly hired nurse navigator and oncology social worker the money will be used in support of patients who need help with prescription drug costs, transportation to and from appointments, and the purchasing of educational materials for patients and their families.
A heartfelt “thank you” goes to the event’s sponsors, donors, and volunteers. With their support, and that of the evening’s guests, the event was marvelous success!

The 6th Annual Chefs Soirée was held on Friday, September 30, 2011 at St. Mary’s Health System’s Nutrition Center of Maine. The guests sampled cheeses from Balfour Farm in Pittsfield and dined on Lobster Ravioli and Mediterranean Chicken prepared by Chefs Paul Landry and David Moyse of Fish Bones American Grill. Chefs Dan Caron made and Katie Ligouri of the Green Ladle created a Chocolate Raspberry Truffle Torte.
While enjoying each of three courses, the guests watched interactive cooking demonstrations, a hallmark of the evening’s events. Fish Bones and the Green Ladle chefs, both of Lewiston, brought a high level of enthusiasm and excitement to the night.
Proceeds from the Soriée will support the Nutrition Center and its programming. The event grossed in excess of $20,000. Based on the belief that good health relies upon access to healthy food, the Nutrition Center is a true ‘community center.’ It is home to the St. Mary’s Food Pantry, Community Cooking Education Programs, the Somali Nutrition Education Initiative and Lots to Gardens. For more information on the Nutrition Center and its programming contact: 207-513-3848.

The Royal Oak Room’s resident chef Scott Johnson prepared hors d’oeuvres of poached lobster cheesecake and a savory mushroom strudel. The dinner started with a baby arugula salad and was followed by a choice of seared strip beef loin with rosemary red wine reduction and cod encrusted in flaky phyllo or a vegetarian meal of crispy trio squash with eggplant and rosemary.
The nine-piece Bob Charest Band brought the audience to their feet, playing tunes from throughout the last 75 years. A live auction brought the highest net revenue for a live fundraising auction for St. Mary’s since 1997! A cruise on Casco Bay, a getaway to Abaco in the Bahamas, and the ever popular Fish Bones American Grill participation dinner were some of the most sought after items.
St. Mary’s board member Mark Anthoine and his wife Deb served as the event’s champions and were pleased to announce that this event was a huge success, raising over $50,000! The net proceeds will benefit St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center’s Operating Room instrumentation and equipment needs. St. Mary’s opened six brand new surgical suites early this year.

l to r: Mary Ellingwood, Deb Burd, Diane Marquis Monaghan, and Deb Perkins
2010 was another very successful year for St. Mary’s fundraising efforts. With the amazing help of donors, businesses, and foundations we raised over $1,250,000 in support of projects, programs, and capital improvements.
In order to thank you all for your help and to continue to show you how much we appreciate your generosity we will provide increased opportunities to visit with you. We will offer tours of St. Mary’s facilities, invite you to breakfast, and host an open house at the Development Office. We would also welcome an invitation to visit with you to say ‘thank s’ and to come and share our many successes.
In January we engaged John Donovan of J Donovan Associates to work with us over the course of the year in the creation and implementation of a Planned Giving Program. J Donovan Associates is not new to St. Mary’s. They helped us in 2008 to create and implement the very successful With All Our Hearts Capital Campaign. We are excited to have his expertise on board as we begin this very important work. Educational sessions on this topic will be offered; stay tuned!
So…once again…thank you, thank you, thank you. Here’s to a great 2011!!
If you’re looking for a way to further the work St. Mary’s does for our community, there’s a way for everyone to help out. From volunteering at the hospital to collecting food for St. Mary’s Food Pantry or offering financial support, you can make a positive difference in our community. For more information and details on how you can help support St. Mary’s call St. Mary’s Health System Development Office at 207-7778363.
