Once a year the staff at The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders wear Pajamas to work to spread awareness about cancer treatment and the side effects patients suffer from. Studies have shown that cancer fatigue is a very common side effect and it is not always understood or addressed appropriately. It can be increased from cancer pain, chemotherapy, anxiety or depression, lack of good nutrition, anemia and many other reasons.
Fatigue can last a long time and affects your self care, relationships, your mood, employment status and finally your sense of self worth. Every day normal fatigue may come and go and gets better with rest. Cancer fatigue is much worse and causes patients to feel worn out and weak. Most cancer patients says this is the most distressing side effect they experience.
As a team we want to be able to identify and help patients not only cope but manage their fatigue so we wear our PJs to show our support!

Members of Saint Dominic Academy’s boys and girls hockey teams recently put up a spirited fight against breast cancer and in the process raised $1,500 during “pink in the Rink” night. One of the most popular series of contests in the year is when St. Dom’s plays against Lewiston High School. It was this event that became the platform for the student’s statements and fund raising. During the evening nearly 115 players showed their support for the cause by wearing pink jerseys and/or laces and used pink tape on their sticks. Proceeds raised during the evening benefited St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center’s Breast Health Program.

St. Mary’s Development Office hosted Shamrocks and Shenanigans on Saturday, March 17 at Martindale Country Club in Auburn. The guests, many adorned in celebratory green attire, enjoyed an array of St. Patrick’s Day activities.
St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center’s cancer program is the recipient of the event’s proceeds grossing over $36,000. Under the direction of the newly hired nurse navigator and oncology social worker the money will be used in support of patients who need help with prescription drug costs, transportation to and from appointments, and the purchasing of educational materials for patients and their families.
A heartfelt “thank you” goes to the event’s sponsors, donors, and volunteers. With their support, and that of the evening’s guests, the event was marvelous success!
