Show What You Grow!!

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Do you live in downtown Lewiston and have a vegetable garden that you’d like to show off to others? Join Lots to Gardens on Thursday, August 26 at 6:00 pm at the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center at 208 Bates Street, Lewiston, for an evening dedicated exclusively to that! Show What You Grow is a chance for community members to show off the great things they’ve grown this season and get to know other gardeners in the neighborhood.

Participants will also have the opportunity to compare notes with other gardeners in the area on topics such as the best ways to trellis tomatoes, how to fight cucumber beetles, and which varieties of string beans produce the most, while admiring the fruits of each other’s labor!

Show What You Grow will start at 6:00 pm with a walking tour of gardens in the downtown Lewiston area, including some of Lots to Gardens’ own Community Gardens. The tour will conclude at 7:30 pm back at the Nutrition Center where participants will gather for refreshments and a slideshow of gardens from around Lewiston.

If you live in downtown Lewiston and have a garden that you’d like to be part of the tour, let us know! If you live outside of the downtown area but would still like to Show What You Grow, don’t worry, you can! We are accepting photos from gardens all over Lewiston to put into our slideshow. Your “garden” can be a window box with your favorite tomatoes, buckets full of spinach and kale, or cultivated beds right next to your house or apartment building.

To learn more about this program, have your garden be part of the walking tour, or to send in photos of your garden, please contact Lots to Gardens at 513.3844 or email.

Raegan Baker, a Restorative Aide at d’Youville Pavilion, has been selected for the 2010 Excellence in Long-Term Care Award!

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

She has been working in a CNA and Restorative Aide capacity for our facility since 2004. Raegan displays extra ordinary level of detail to our Elders everyday. She provides restorative programming to those in need, as quoted from her supervisor, “Raegan is flexible, she will work as a CNA when needed and can also cover two floors as a Restorative aide, prioritizing her schedule to accommodate the need. Raegan has broad shoulders and can work with the most challenging of care needs and still leave smiling.” Raegan advocates and understands how important her role is in the daily lives of our Elders and when she comes to work, she checks in to assure she is able to meet their care needs to the best of her ability. I have witnessed Raegan go out of her way to provide restorative services to those Elders who were not on the “to see list” but requested a “walk” for the day.

Raegan is perceived as a leader among her peers in promoting a positive environment for the care of our Elders. This year Raegan volunteered to help with our facility’s skills fair. Raegan provided education to her peers on appropriate transfers and use of SLIPP and gait belt devices. This education was geared to promote safe practices for both the Elders and employees. Raegan is a mentor, and has trained several new employees, both CNA and Restorative Aides. Raegan is a shining star.

Raegan has stepped up to the plate to assist her neighborhood (term we use versus unit) to bring quality of life to the Elders who reside there. Her neighborhood voted to have a dog, Zoey, to come and live in the neighborhood. After some time, Zoey was displaying some behaviors that were uncomfortable and needed to be corrected. In coming up with a plan, the team approached Raegan to assist us with being trained by a dog trainer to curb these behaviors. Raegan, not ever owning a dog, agreed! She has been dedicated to her work with Zoey and our Elders who live in the neighborhood are enjoying having Zoey back in their lives.

Raegan is special to all of us, including the Elders. Excellence is a word that easily comes to mind when we think of Raegan. She has a “can do attitude,” that is recognized by our Elders, her peers, managers and administration.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HealthSteps is an award-winning health education and prevention program for adults that focuses on the whole person – body, mind, and spirit.

HealthSteps offers a wide range of classes with the core membership fee as well as a variety of specialty classes including Prenatal Yoga. This class is a program geared for women in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Heidi L. Hayes-Audet, R.Y.T., will gently guide expectant mothers through this 4-week class where they will learn postures and breathing techniques to invite deep relaxation, conquer fatigue, stretch, strengthen, and prepare their changing bodies for childbirth. Students will also have an introduction to a guided meditation practice. Preregistration is required. No prior yoga experience is necessary.

The benefits of yoga during pregnancy are numerous. Proper breathing and yoga postures can help normalize blood pressure, reduce stress, relieve discomfort in the spine, strengthen pelvic muscles, expand the pelvic cavity, and strengthen the entire reproductive system. In addition, prenatal yoga can help guard against excessive weight gain, increase hemoglobin count, normalize thyroid functioning, stimulate the pituitary gland to release prolactin–essential for lactation control, and may enrich breast milk.

Yoga students need to bring a pillow, blanket, yoga strap, and water bottle. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid eating a heavy meal one hour before class.

Interested in Learning Water-Bath Canning?

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Lots to Gardens and the Nutrition Center will be hosting a regular open canning time for anyone interested in learning to water-bath can or for folks who’d like to can for the fun of it!

Participants in the class will leave with hand outs on basic canning techniques, lots of recipes, and a jar of the day’s delicious fare.

Although we will be focusing on water-bath canning we will be planning to use that time to practice techniques on drying and freezing as well.

The regular time set aside to can and preserve will be every Wednesday from 1-4pm through the month of October at the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center on 208 Bates Street Lewiston, ME.

The classes will focus on a different recipe each week and will include pickling of all types (cucumbers, snap beans, beets) as well as salsas, relishes, jams and jellies. We are more than happy to repeat classes and are open to suggestions as to what to focus on from week to week.

For all classes we will need a minimum of 4 people to run the program and are going to try to keep it to no more than 8 people.

There will be a $5 fee to participate but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

If you are interested in participating this coming Wednesday- we will be pickling cucumbers, or another Wednesday in the future please email or give a call at 207-513-3844!
